Students will learn about the danger and difficulty of generalizaing about peoples and cultures, even as they learn to draw conclusions about what people believe defines them.

Reading primary and secondary sources

Students will learn to read and analyze a variety of primary and secondary sources, including an unabridged edition of Tocqueville's Democracy in America.

Effective writing

Students will improve their writing skills in papers and exams.
