Produce polished, competent, formal writing, free from distracting errors in mechanics, syntax, and formatting, and in accordance with MLA formatting and citation guidelines.
Literary History
Successful students will demonstrate, through exams and essays, an incipient understanding of some of the ways that classical literature and culture has shaped, and continues to shape, the development of English literature.
Appreciation
Successful students will have developed an informed sense of the quality of the texts, of their beauty (or not), of their relevance (or not) to life as a whole, and similar range of experiences which may or may not be demonstrable through academic evaluation.
