STL Standard 1. Students will develop an understanding of the characteristics and scope of technology (as it pertains to communication technologies).

STL Standard 2. Students will develop an understanding of the core concepts of technology (as it pertains to communication technologies).

STL Standard 3. Students will develop an understanding of the relationships among technologies and the connections between technology and other fields of study (as it pertains to communication technologies). STL Standard 4. Students will develop an understanding of the cultural, social, economic, and political effects of technology (as it pertains to communication technologies).

STL Standard 5. Students will develop an understanding of the effects of technology on the environment (as it pertains to communication technologies).

STL Standard 6. Students will develop an understanding of the role of society in the development and use of technology (as it pertains to communication technologies).

Course Outcomes - Level 2

  1. Historical Development: Introduce students to past communication technologies, with a focus on their development, usability, sustainability, evolution, and relative impact on: society, politics, economy, environment, and leisure.
  2. Ethics: Help students develop an understanding of the ethical development and use of communication technologies.
  3. User and Actor Skills: Help students develop the skills to not only be users, but actors in the positive development and evolution of society’s Technology (Postman, 1999).
  4. Tools and Services: Expose and train students in a broad range of communication technology tools and services (i.e., Wiki language, desktop publishing, web authoring, HTML and CSS languages, Flash and JavaScript, social bookmarking, Video and TV production, RSS and ATOM feeds and subscriptions, Pod and podcasting, digital photography (techniques, tools, storage), computer hardware and networking issues, GPS technologies, and 3D modeling.
  5. Technology Assessment: Throughout this semester students will be asked to collect, implement, and assess the relative value of various contemporary technologies, and will be asked to discuss if and how the technologies should be used in classrooms and in the world.
