Program Requirements

This major is designed to prepare students to teach in public schools. In order to graduate with this major, students are required to complete Utah State Office of Education licensing requirements. Proficiency audition is required for placement and registration in technique courses.
Dance technique courses (including Dance 243R and 244R) require a grade of at least B- for advancement to the next level.
The Dance Department requires at least 21 hours from major courses to be completed in residency at BYU for this degree program. These hours may also go toward BYU's 30-hour residency requirement for graduation.
Students must complete an annual mandatory advisement.
For students accepted into the major after August 1, 2014, grades below C in any required coursework in a teaching major or teaching minor will not be accepted. Teacher candidates must maintain a total GPA of 3.0 or higher throughout the program and to qualify for student teaching. A teaching minor is recommended.

Teacher Licensure requirements: Contact the Education Advisement Center, 350 MCKB, 422-3426, to schedule the final interview to clear your application for the secondary teaching license. You should be registered for your last semester at BYU prior to the scheduled appointment.
Note 1: Fingerprinting and FBI clearance must be completed before entry into Dance 466.
Note 2: Sc Ed 350 must be taken prior to or concurrently with Dance 466.

Complete an elementary teaching practicum of 42 hours of unpaid dance core curriculum (20 hours planning and reflection, plus 22 hours teaching with children grades K-6) in one of the following ways: 1) Kinnect teaching Winter and Spring; 2) Arts Bridge Side-by-Side Teaching Project; 3) Other elementary dance teaching internships approved by the dance education faculty.

Student teachers/interns must complete three forms in their LiveText accounts (PIBS, CDS, FED) and attach their TWS to the LiveText account for their program. All four must be completed to be cleared for graduation.
