Successful students will evaluate letters of Cicero, Seneca, Pliny, and later authors in the original language and express their understanding in examinations and essays.
Reading Latin with Understanding
By approaching a variety of Latin epistles successful students will learn techniques of reading Latin prose literature with subtlety and precision.
Critical Method
Successful students will understand and apply principles and practice of critical method in all its complexity, with specific reference to the Latin epistolary tradition.
Literary History
Successful students will understand the place of the Latin epistle in the literary history of Classical antiquity, locating it in the larger context of political and cultural history.
