General Admission Procedures

Brigham Young University exists to provide an education consistent with the religious and family values taught by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Therefore admission preference is reserved for members of the church in good standing; however BYU does not unlawfully discriminate against applicants for admission based upon sex, race, religion, national origin, age, or disability who meet the requirements, who agree to abide by the Church Education System Honor Code and Dress and Grooming Standards, and who are otherwise qualified based upon available space.

Unless granted an exception, an applicant who is currently excommunicated, disfellowshipped, or disaffiliated from the Church is not admissible until reinstated to full fellowship in the Church. Also, unless granted an exception, an applicant who is on probation with the Church or who otherwise lacks an ecclesiastical endorsement is not admissible until the issue giving rise to the probation or lack of ecclesiastical endorsement is resolved with the applicant’s authorized ecclesiastical leader. The university ultimately reserves the right to make the admission decision.

As required by Title IX and Section 504, BYU does not unlawfully discriminate on the basis of sex or handicap in its educational program. The requirement not to discriminate extends to admission and employment. Questions about Title IX may be referred to the university's Title IX coordinator or to the U.S. Department of Education's Office for Civil Rights. Questions about Section 504 may be referred to the university's equal opportunity manager.

Admission Deadlines

All materials must be postmarked on or before the deadline date of the semester or term for which the student is applying.

Admission Status and Academic Standing 

Admission status (admit or deny) and academic standing (good, warning, or probation) will be determined by the Admission Committee. This review is for all applicants, including former BYU students.

American College Test (ACT) or Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) 

All new freshman applicants, or students whose high school graduating class has yet to graduate, and transfer students who have completed fewer than 24 semester (36 quarter) hours of college credit at the time of application are required to take the ACT or SAT. The ACT is administered nationally six times each year (September, October, December, February, April, and June). The SAT is offered seven times a year in October, November, December, January, March (or April, alternating each year), May, and June. Students are encouraged to take the test during the last semester of their junior year in high school and again in the first semester of their senior year in high school. Because test results take approximately four weeks after the test date to arrive at the Admission Office, students should plan to take the test at least a month before the deadline for the semester in which they intend to enroll. Standardized test registration information and materials can be obtained from most high school or college counseling offices or from the American College Testing Program, 500 ACT Drive, P.O. College Level Examination Program (CLEP) Credit 

BYU does not give credit for general CLEP exams or subject exams. 

Continuing Student Leave of Absence

BYU daytime eligible students may take a leave of absence for one major semester (fall or winter) per academic year without prior notification to the university. An academic year begins with fall semester and continues through the next spring-summer.

Consider the following prior to taking a leave of absence:

• Ecclesiastical Endorsement: Students must have a current ecclesiastical endorsement to register for subsequent semesters. To complete this requirement, the applicant's bishop must submit the continuing student ecclesiastical endorsement form found online at https://endorse.byu.edu.
• Scholarship: The continuing student scholarship application deadline for fall, winter, and spring-summer scholarships is March 1, regardless of BYU attendance.
• Federal Loan Repayment: Student loans have a grace period of six months beginning on the date that the borrower drops below at least half-time enrollment. If leave of absence extends beyond six months, loan repayments will likely begin.
• Reapplication for Admission: If a student fails to enroll in classes before the add/drop deadline of the major semester (fall/winter) immediately following a leave of absence, the student will lose continuing student status and will have to reapply for admission as a former student. Re-admission is NOT guaranteed. Note: Students attending another school during a leave of absence must remember to send an updated transcript to BYU so the credits can be applied to the BYU record. Students who do not attend another school during a leave of absence may return to BYU with their academic status the same as it was before a leave of absence was taken.
• Suspended and dismissed students should consult with the Academic Support Office (see http://aso.byu.edu).
• New freshman, transfer, and former students must attend the semester or term to which they have been admitted.
• A leave of absence may be taken directly prior to a missionary deferment (consecutive semesters). Following a mission, applicants must enroll at Brigham Young University within a given time period, as noted in the Missionary Deferment section below.
• Applicants should be sure to resolve any university holds as they may prohibit their ability to register and/or receive other university services.

Evaluation of Transfer College Credit 

All college transcripts will be evaluated to determine admissibility of an applicant even if all or any of that credit is not accepted for transfer. Transfer Services in the Registrar's Office will determine the transferability of undergraduate credit to BYU.

In determining transferability of credit the following criteria will be considered: comparable credit hours, course level, seat time, and course descriptions. Vocational credit is not accepted, even if earned at an accredited institution.

Additional factors that can affect the transfer of credit:

1. Military courses are evaluated using the ACE recommendations in the upper-division baccalaureate category from the Guide to the Evaluation of Educational Experiences in the Armed Services.
2. Associate of arts or science degrees from approved transfer institutions will fill most BYU university core requirements with the exception of American Heritage, Advanced Written and Oral Communication, Languages of Learning, and the religion hours at BYU. American Heritage, Advanced Written and Oral Communication, and the Languages of Learning requirements may be filled by completing specific courses at other colleges. NOTE: Associate of arts or science degrees must consist of at least 35% academic classes (i.e., general education) in order to fulfill BYU's core requirements as stated above. Associate of arts or science degrees that include more than 65% vocational courses will be evaluated on a course-by-course basis. Students who have questions about the completion of university core courses are invited to contact Transfer Services in the BYU Registrar's Office, (801) 422-8522, for further information.
3. Credit is evaluated on a course-by-course basis for students who do not complete an associate of arts or science degree. Transfer guides have been established for some of BYU's main feeder institutions. A list of these transfer guides can be found at http://transfer.byu.edu.
4. Credit earned more than eight years before admission or readmission (including transfer credit) may, at the discretion of the university, be accepted to meet general education and university graduation requirements as well as major requirements.
5. Credit earned from an LDS institute of religion must be posted to an official CES transcript.

Full Disclosure

Failure to disclose and submit all documents required for admission, including transcripts from each institution in which the applicant has or is currently enrolled, or any falsification of information required for admission consideration may result in immediate suspension and loss of all credit earned at BYU.

Official Notice of Admission Committee Action 

Applicants will receive electronic notice of the official action taken by the Admission Committee (oral communication does not constitute a valid offer of admission). Admission can be granted only by Admission Services and not by any other BYU department. An official offer of admission is valid only for the semester or term indicated. Students who wish to change the entry date specified in the notice of acceptance must request permission to do so from the Admission Committee before the designated deadline for the entry date they desire. 

High School Graduation Alternatives 

Those who complete their secondary education through the General Education Development (GED) test, home study, home school, or other programs will be reviewed individually by the Admission Committee to determine admissibility. Additional information (achievement tests, personal interview, etc.) may be required as part of the application process.

High School Preparation

Students are encouraged to complete high school courses from the following list of college-preparation courses. In addition, those who complete Advanced Placement (AP) or International Baccalaureate (IB) courses will receive additional consideration in admission decisions.

• Four years of mathematics
• Four years of English
• Two to three years of laboratory science
• Two years of history or government
• Two or more years of foreign language

Homeschooled Applicants

Applicants who have been homeschooled in lieu of attending a traditional high school environment must receive a composite ACT score of 27 or higher to be competitive for admission consideration. These individuals must also complete all other application requirements for freshman applicants. Applicants should contact Admission Services (801-422-5000) for more details on the application process for homeschooled students.

Housing 

New freshmen students who complete the admission application by the December 1 priority deadline will receive extra consideration in the admission process and priority in on-campus housing selection. Please note that while it is anticipated that all freshman applicants who meet the December 1 priority deadline will have the opportunity to live in on-campus housing facilities, those who apply early in the process will have an advantage in their housing selection.

LDS Seminary 

Students are encouraged to participate in LDS seminary during each year of high school. Brigham Young University is committed to the concept that thoughtful and consistent study of the scriptures is vital to the preparation of those desiring to enter BYU. The number of years of LDS seminary completed (released-time, early morning, or home study) will influence consideration in admission decisions.

Missionary Deferment

BYU students who want to defer their enrollment for an LDS mission must complete a Missionary Deferment form, available at http://admissions.byu.edu/mission-deferments. The deferment form must be submitted after receiving a mission call, and before the end of the semester in which the student was due to enroll. The following conditions apply:

• Do not attend any college or university between leaving and returning 
• Complete a full mission and receive an ecclesiastical endorsement from the mission president
• Return for the semester or term indicated on the Missionary Deferment form

Students wishing to discontinue after classes begin should contact OneStop Counseling at 801-422-4104.

Social Security Number 

Admission Services does not require students to submit a Social Security number when applying for admission. All students will be assigned an appropriate identification number. The U.S. government will require the university to collect a Social Security number for students who are applying for any kind of federal financial aid or on-campus student employment. Social security numbers may be obtained at the nearest Social Security office or the local post office.

US Applicants

New Freshmen

New freshmen are high school or home school graduates with no college credit or with college credit completed prior to high school graduation. Students who are high school age and will not be completing high school are also considered new freshmen.

Application 

Those applying as new freshmen must complete the following requirements:

• Pay the non-refundable, one-time $35 application fee
• Submit transcripts* from all high schools attended (including transcripts for grade 9)
• Submit official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended (if applicable)
• Submit ACT/SAT scores

*Any college or high school work that is completed internationally will need to be evaluated by a third party. Our preferred evaluation agency is IERF (www.ierf.org/byu-ces).

Admission Criteria

All new freshman applications go through a holistic review process which is comprised of the following elements: ecclesiastical endorsement, unweighted high school GPA, ACT or SAT score, seminary attendance, service, leadership, individual talents, creativity, AP/IB courses taken, unique or special circumstances, and other factors showing a student's ability to strengthen the BYU community.

Note that students who are denied as new freshmen will not be reconsidered for admission until they have completed 24 hours of graded college credit by the application deadline, with at least one college course having been completed after high school graduation.

Transfer Students

Transfer with Fewer than 24 College Credits

This student type refers to students who have completed fewer than 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) of graded college credit. This does not include AP, IB, or CLEP credit; or institute of religion credit. College credits must be completed by the application deadline. These students will be evaluated for admission based on both their high school and college work.

Students who have completed college work and apply for admission prior to graduating from high school will be evaluated as new freshmen regardless of the number of college hours completed. Once a student has graduated from high school and has taken at least one course at another college or university, this applicant will be considered a transfer student and college credits taken during high school will count toward the 24 credit hour threshold.

Note that students who are denied as new freshmen will not be reconsidered for admission until they have completed 24 hours of graded college credit by the application deadline. 

Application 

Those applying as transfer students with fewer than 24 credits must complete the following requirements:

• Pay the non-refundable, one-time $35 application fee
• Submit transcripts* from all high schools attended (including transcripts for grade 9)

BYU does not accept vocational transfer credit (college courses leading to an applied associate degree or certification) from any institution. This type of credit includes subjects such as auto mechanics, cosmetology, dental hygiene, and other technical fields. Once admitted, each incoming transcript will be evaluated for vocational credit, and any vocational credits will be marked as non-transferrable credit. If vocational credit is earned as part of an associate of arts or science degree, it will still be marked as non-transferrable. However, the associate degree will still be recognized as long as at least 35% of the credit within the degree is considered to be academic credit.

Transfer with 24 or More College Credits

This student type refers to students who have completed 24 or more semester hours (36 quarter hours) of graded college credit. This does not include AP, IB, CLEP or institute of religion credit. College credits must be completed by the application deadline.

Students who have completed college work and apply for admission prior to graduating from high school will be evaluated as new freshmen regardless of the number of college hours completed. Once a student has graduated from high school and taken at least one course at another college or university, this applicant will be considered a transfer student and college credits taken during high school will count toward the 24 credit hour threshold.

Application 

Those applying as transfer students with 24 or more credits must complete the following requirements:

Admission Criteria

All transfer applications go through a holistic review process which is comprised of the following elements: ecclesiastical endorsement, leadership experience, GPA, course selection, quality of coursework, Institute of Religion involvement, academic goals, and other similar factors. Transfer students with 90 or more graded semester credit hours are unlikely to be admitted. Transfer applicants will receive their admission decisions no later than 4 weeks after the final admission deadline.

BYU does not accept vocational transfer credit (college courses leading to an applied associate degree or certification) from any institution. This type of credit includes subjects such as auto mechanics, cosmetology, dental hygiene, and other technical fields. Once admitted, each incoming transcript will be evaluated for vocational credit, and any vocational credits will be marked as non-transferrable credit. If vocational credit is earned as part of an associate of arts or science degree, it will still be marked as non-transferrable. However, the associate degree will still be recognized as long as at least 35% of the credit within the degree is considered to be academic credit.

Former Students

Former students are students who were admitted to the university as fully-matriculated students, completed coursework at BYU, but have been absent from the university for more than one major semester. Students who have only attended BYU's Visiting Student Program, Evening Classes, Salt Lake Center, or other Continuing Education programs are not considered fully-matriculated students and will not be classified as former students.

Application 

Those applying as former students must complete the following requirements:

• Submit official college transcripts* from any schools attended since last attending BYU

Visiting Student Program

The Spring/Summer Visiting Student Program is available to students who are not currently admitted to BYU; the program is for those who will be pursuing a degree at another university or who would like to receive some credit from BYU. Admission to the Visiting Student Program does not imply continued enrollment at BYU beyond spring-summer.

Application 

Applicants interested in the Visiting Student Program must complete the following requirements:

• Pay the non-refundable, one-time $35 application fee
• Submit official college transcripts* from all institutions attended
• If fewer than 24 semester/36 quarter hours of graded college credit have been completed, also submit

Admission Criteria 

The application deadline for the Visiting Student Program is the week before classes begin. Admission to the Spring/Summer Visiting Student Program is determined on a first-come, first-serve basis. Students must have a 2.5 college GPA or a 2.5 high school GPA and an 18 or higher on the ACT.

BYU Concurrent Enrollment

Local high school students who wish to be considered for admission as part-time students while enrolled in high school will apply as concurrent enrollment students.

Application 

Applicants desiring to attend BYU as concurrent enrollment students must meet the following criteria:

• Complete parts 1, 2, and 3 of the online application at apply.lds.org
• Request the ecclesiastical endorsement online at endorse.byu.edu
• Pay the non-refundable, one-time $35 application fee
• Complete junior year of high school and be at least 16 years old
• Have an unweighted cumulative GPA of 3.70 or higher
• Indicate unconditional support from the high school counselor and parent
• Live locally
• Agree to enroll in no more than 11.5 credit hours during fall and winter semesters and no more than 5.5 hours during spring and summer terms
• Fill out the concurrent enrollment voucher available at http://admissions.byu.edu/admissions-forms

Note that a new concurrent enrollment voucher must be submitted for each semester of enrollment at the university.

Post-baccala​ureate Studies (PBS)

Students who have already earned a bachelor's degree and are not enrolled in a graduate program are not normally admissible to BYU. We do not offer a second bachelor's degree. The Post-baccalaureate program is designed to assist a limited number of students who desire to complete a few prerequisites for graduate program applications. These students may use university resources during spring and summer terms to complete needed coursework for graduate school admission. During fall and winter semesters, the University reserves resources for undergraduate students and students who have been officially admitted into a graduate program. To be considered for admission, post-baccalaureate students should apply online using the undergraduate application.

Application 

Post-baccalaureate applicants must complete the following requirements:

• Have a baccalaureate degree
• Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher
• Complete parts 1, 2, 3 and 7 of the online application at apply.lds.org
• Request the ecclesiastical endorsement online at endorse.byu.edu
• Pay the non-refundable, one-time $35 application fee
• Submit official transcripts* from each institution awarding a degree

*Any college or high school work that is completed internationally will need to be evaluated by a third party. Our preferred evaluation agency is IERF (www.ierf.org/byu-ces).

The application deadline for the Post-baccalaureate Studies program is the first day of classes. International students are not normally eligible for this program.

International Applicants

To be considered for admission as an international applicant, students will need to demonstrate strong academic qualifications, evidence of competencies in English, and a willingness to adhere to the BYU Honor Code and Dress and Grooming Standards.

Admission Deadlines

All materials must be postmarked on or before the deadline date of the semester or term for which the student is applying.

The priority deadline does not apply to international new freshmen for admission decisions; however, international freshman applicants who meet the December 1 deadline will have priority status when choosing on-campus housing.

Continuing Student Leave of Absence

BYU day-time eligible students may take a leave of absence for one major semester (fall or winter) per academic year. An academic year begins with fall semester and continues through the next spring-summer. International students must obtain clearance from the International Student Services Office before taking a leave of absence.

Students should consider the following prior to taking a leave of absence:

• Ecclesiastical Endorsement: Students must have a current ecclesiastical endorsement to register for subsequent semesters. To complete this requirement, the applicant's bishop must submit the continuing student ecclesiastical endorsement form found online at https://endorse.byu.edu.
• Re-application for Admission: If the student fails to enroll in classes before the add/drop deadline of the major semester (fall/winter) immediately following a leave of absence, he/she will have to reapply for admission as a former student. Re-admission is NOT guaranteed. Note: Students who attend another school during a leave of absence must remember to send an updated transcript to BYU so the credits can be applied to the BYU record. Students who do not attend another school during a leave of absence may return to BYU with their academic status the same as it was before a leave of absence was taken.

• New freshman, transfer, and former students must attend the semester or term to which they have been admitted.

• Applicants should be sure to resolve any university holds as they may prohibit their ability to register and/or receive other university services.

English Proficiency 

Applicants whose native or primary language is not English, AND/OR has citizenship in a country where English is not the official language, will be required to prove English proficiency. We require proof of proficiency regardless of time spent studying in the United States. TOEFL, IELTS, and PTE scores are valid for two years. If the exam expires before the application deadline, a new score will be required. The Cambridge English exams do not expire. 

BYU accepts TOEFL, IELTS, PTE, and Cambridge English: Advanced. Please note that meeting minimum requirements will not guarantee admission. The minimum scores for each test are:

• TOEFL iBT: 80 overall, 20 in reading, 20 in writing, 20 in speaking, and 20 in listening
• IELTS: 6.5 overall, 6.0 in reading, 6.0 in writing, 6.5 in speaking, and 6.0 in listening
• PTE: 53 overall, 49 in reading, 49 in writing, 49 in speaking, and 49 in listening
• Cambridge English: Advanced (we will also accept Proficient exam scores if they meet our minimum) 180 overall, 172 in reading, 172 in writing, 180 in speaking, 172 in listening, and 180 in use of English

Homeschooled International Applicants

These individuals must complete all application requirements for international new freshman applicants. Their academic qualifications will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. International homeschooled applicants should contact the International Admission Office at 801-422-5000 or submit a question on ymessage.byu.edu for more information.

Housing 

The admission application is also the application for on-campus housing. Housing Services will contact the students with further information once admitted.

International Student Deposit

If admitted to the university, all international students must make a deposit of $4,000 USD before they will be able to register for classes. The deposit will be held in an escrow account with the intent to be released to the student during his final semester before graduation. Students who experience unforeseen financial hardship while studying at BYU may petition to use up to $3,000 of their deposit before their final semester. International students who have already accessed the $3,000 USD from their deposit and who find they are unable to cover the costs associated with continued education at BYU will receive the final $1,000 in the form of a plane ticket to return to their home country.

Missionary Deferment

International students who want to defer their enrollment for an LDS mission must complete a Missionary Deferment form, available at http://admissions.byu.edu/mission-deferments. International students must meet with an International Student Services advisor before completing the mission deferment form. The deferment form should be submitted after receiving a mission call, and before the end of the semester in which the student was due to enroll. The following conditions apply:

• Do not attend any college or university between leaving and returning
• Complete a full mission and receive an ecclesiastical endorsement from the mission president
• Return for the semester or term indicated on the Missionary Deferment form

Mandatory Check-in

 All international students must report to International Services, 1351 WSC, 801-422-2695, within one week of arrival on campus.

Official University Visa Policy 

Students should not attempt to enter the United States to attend BYU as a full-time student without presenting a Form I-20 from BYU (certificate of eligibility), a valid passport, and a valid F-1 visa, or other appropriate immigration documents. Maintaining visa status is the responsibility of the student.

Registration and Completion Requirements 

All undergraduate international students must register for and complete at least 12 hours of daytime credit per semester (6 hours per term).

Verification of Finances

In addition to the deposit, international students requiring a Form I-20 must provide proof of finances for the first year of study. The Form I-20 will not be issued and a registration hold will be placed on the student's file until the proof of finances has been provided. Once the financial support requirement has been cleared, the Form I-20 will be processed and sent to the student, and the registration hold will then be released.

International New Freshm​en

New freshmen are secondary or homeschool graduates with no college credit or with college credit completed prior to secondary school graduation. Students who are secondary school age but will not be completing secondary school are also considered new freshmen.

Application 

Those applying as international new freshman must complete the following requirements:

• Complete parts 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, and 8 of the online application at apply.lds.org
• Request the ecclesiastical endorsement online at endorse.byu.edu
• Pay the non-refundable, one-time $35 application fee
• Submit ACT/SAT scores
• Submit TOEFL/IELTS/PTE/Cambridge English: Advanced scores (if applicable)
• All international students will need to have any non-US-accredited secondary school and college transcripts (if applicable) sent to an international transcript evaluation agency. BYU's preferred transcript evaluation agency is International Education Research Foundation (IERF) www.ierf.org/byu-ces/. If applying for the evaluation online, be sure to select "BYU-Undergraduate" as the recipient, as IERF works with a number of BYU departments. This will ensure that your report reaches the correct office. Also, when selecting report type, you must select "detail report."
  
  BYU will also accept evaluations from World Education Services (WES) (www.wes.org). The required type of evaluation report for high school (secondary education) documents is "DxD," and the required type of evaluation report for college or university documents is "CxC."
  
  DO NOT send your transcripts directly to us unless they are an accredited US institution. We will discard any international transcripts that are not properly evaluated.

Admission Criteria 

All new freshman applications go through a holistic review process which is comprised of the following elements: ecclesiastical endorsement, secondary school GPA, ACT or SAT score, seminary attendance, service, leadership, individual talents, creativity, unique or special circumstances, and other factors showing a student's ability to strengthen the BYU community. Admission decisions are sent no later than 4 weeks after the final admission deadline. 

International Transfer Applicants

International Transfer Applicants with Fewer than 24 College Credits

This student type applies to applicants who have completed fewer than 24 semester hours (36 quarter hours) of graded college credit. This does not include AP, IB, CLEP, or LDS institute of religion credit. College credits must be completed by the application deadline in order to count toward the 24 credit hour threshold. These students will be evaluated for admission based on both their secondary school and college work.

Students who have completed college work and apply for admission prior to graduating from secondary school will be evaluated as new freshmen, regardless of the number of college hours completed. Once a student has graduated from secondary school and taken at least one course at another college or university, this applicant will be considered a transfer student and any college credits taken during secondary school will count toward the 24 credit hour threshold.

Note that students who are denied as new freshmen will not be reconsidered for admission until they have completed at least 24 hours of college credit, with at least one college course having been completed after secondary school graduation.

• Submit ACT/SAT scores
• Submit TOEFL/IELTS/PTE/Cambridge English: Advanced scores (if applicable)
• ​All international students will need to have any non-US-accredited secondary school and college transcripts (if applicable) sent to an international transcript evaluation agency. BYU's preferred transcript evaluation agency is International Education Research Foundation (IERF) www.ierf.org/byu-ces/. If applying for the evaluation online, be sure to select "BYU-Undergraduate" as the recipient, as IERF works with a number of BYU departments. This will ensure that your report reaches the correct office. Also, when selecting report type, you must select "detail report."

Admission Criteria

BYU does not accept vocational transfer credit (college courses leading to an applied associate degree or certification) from any institution. This type of credit includes subjects such as auto mechanics, cosmetology, dental hygiene, and other technical fields. Once admitted, each incoming transcript will be evaluated for vocational credit, and any vocational credits will be marked as non-transferrable credit. If vocational credit is earned as part of an associate of arts or science degree, it will still be marked as non-transferrable. However, the associate degree will still be recognized as long as at least 35% of the credit within the degree is considered to be academic credit.

International transfer applicants with three or more years of work at another college or university are unlikely to be admitted. Admission decisions are sent no later than 4 weeks after the final admission deadline.

International Former Students

Former students are students who were admitted to the university as fully-matriculated students, completed coursework at BYU, but have been absent from the university for more than one major semester. Students who have only attended BYU's Visiting Student Program, Evening Classes, Salt Lake Center, or other Continuing Education programs are not considered fully-matriculated students and will not be classified as former students.
